But I do not “get” your statement “if he had been a better natural athlete.” Magic Johnson was an incredible athlete. He competed at the 16 years of 2007 2023 Transformers thank you for the memories signatures shirt and I love this higher possible level in basketball (NBA champion and Olympic gold medalist). Johnson started on a team that won a collegiate national championship. Then after being drafted as the overall #1 NBA pick, he won multiple world titles as a member of the eLos Angeles Lakers. In one championship game, when NBA legend Kareem Abdul Jabbar was injured, Magic stepped in to play center and dropped 42 points and 15 rebounds on the Philadelphia 76ers and was named the Finals MVP. My point is there isn’t or wasn’t a whole lot of room for improvement in his “natural” athleticism or abilities. Perhaps he wasn’t as physically gifted as Michael Jordan or wasn’t as great of a shooter as Larry Bird, but Magic was the complete player. He was the player for whom the term “triple double” was coined, and if you ever saw one of his full-speed, no-look passes it would become clear. Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson is a legend who deserves his place in the conversation of all-time greatest payers. Bird was the better defender. Bird was selected to three all defensive teams (2nd team) early in his career and Magic was never selected for an all defensive team. Magic as a rookie was a poor defender, so much so that he required special coaching to help overcome this deficiency. This is covered in his book “My Life” pgs 100–101. Norm Nixon was given the assignment to defend the other team’s PG in order to strengthen LA’s team defense and keep the opposing PG from running up big scoring nights against Magic. Magic said the zone defense he played in college at Michigan State did not prepare him for the pro game. Neither player was looked upon as a great defender but Bird’s defensive team selections and his defensive win shares help prove this point. After Bird’s dual heel surgery which forced him to miss the 1988–89 season and with his increasing back issues, I think Magic was the better defender for these last years. Some may point to Magic’s steals for an argument, but steals can also be attributed to a defender not playing good defense and taking risks that sometimes result in the other team getting easy baskets. The PG position often leads to players having a lot of steals because they are guarding the opposing PG and therefore are guarding the ball during most of the game – similar to the PG position often leading to making more turnovers and having more assists. Bird had more blocked shots, probably due to him playing forward and being closer to the basket where most shot attempts are contested. I think with research it will be clear that between these two players the choice would be Bird.

In my view, it would be a tie. Both men were so creative, such willing (and genius!) passers, and both so multi-faceted in their games, that either one would fit extremely well in any top team. Larry Bird is considered a top 10 player of all time, if not Top 5, and the 16 years of 2007 2023 Transformers thank you for the memories signatures shirt and I love this greatest small forward ever to play the Game. He also played in the Golden Era of the 80s and on one of the best Celtics teams ever. As like any “Classic” that stands the test of time, “Larry Legend” is no exception. He would definitely still be a top player if not perform better in today’s game. Sure it’s arguable that players are more athletic today and Larry was not the most explosive. However, fundamentals and intelligence are the foundation to success in the NBA. Not to mention his toughness and leadership skills.
