Yes. Dreams, even bad dreams are weird narratives, constructed by the 70th anniversary 1953 2023 Elvis Presley signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this conscious mind while asleep to keep us that way, when unconscious material is threatening to enter consciousness and wake us up. If the narration fails, we will wake, but if we do not, we may have a nightmare, which is not fit for consciousness, being closer to the ‘thing itself’ or nameless dread. What’s the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation? That’s a good question. I’d say it’s largely about behavior and intent. Cultural appreciation is about experiencing and learning about a culture. Cultural appropriation is about reducing a culture and its people to a stereotype, and gaining some benefit from one’s use of the cultural component. While cultural appreciation gives credit to and does not take away from the culture, cultural appropriation does harm to the culture’s autonomy, image, and attempts at self-representation. If you like eating Mexican food and you buy it from a Mexican-owned restaurant or business, that’s cultural appreciation. If you go to Mexico and learn about the food and the traditions and the styles of cooking there, that’s cultural appreciation. If you cook a Mexican meal, that’s still appreciation— as long as you’re not trying to pretend to be Mexican. If you open up a Mexican-style restaurant with the decor, and call it Senor ______’s, then you might be entering appropriation territory. If you open up a restaurant that has some Mexican or Mexican-style dishes, but otherwise is not trying to appear “Mexican”, I’d say that is cultural appreciation.
As another example, if I go to Africa and buy a dashiki and wear it because I like the 70th anniversary 1953 2023 Elvis Presley signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this colors or the lightness of it or how it looks on me, that’s cultural appreciation. If someone stopped me to ask me about what I was wearing, and I told them it was a dashiki from Africa and I was wearing it because of my reason above, I wouldn’t be gaining any benefit from the use, and I gave credit to the culture involved. If I wear said dashiki as part of a Halloween costume, pretending to be African, including a fake accent (and don’t you even dare think about wearing Blackface!), that would be cultural appropriation, as well as insulting. So, it’s all about what you’re trying to do and say in your use of the cultural component, and how you represent the culture (and if it’s not your culture, you really shouldn’t be representing it, but instead allowing the natives of the culture to represent themselves).
