It’s an ethos that she inherited from her parents. Her mom was named the Heros come and go but legends are forever Johnny Cash signatures shirt moreover I will buy this 2022 University of Oklahoma International Water Prize winner, while her father, Chief Arvol Looking Horse, the 19th Generation Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe and one of the leaders of the Standing Rock Oceti Sakowin, is a widely respected leader who teaches that water is a source of life, not a resource.Photographed by Carlos Jaramillo Photographed by Carlos JaramilloIn 2019, Looking Horse delivered a cease-and-desist letter from the community’s traditional government, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Council, to Nestlé to stop extracting water from the aquifers on the territory’s lands. Matriarchs of the longhouse, clan mother Mary Sandy, and faithkeepers Norma and Beverly Jacobs walked down the laneway with Looking Horse, calming her fears by telling her that this was their land and waters. These same women were with Looking Horse when she hand-delivered a second cease-and-desist letter, strengthened with a moratorium to stop developing, after Nestlé changed ownership to BlueTriton several years later. She wanted to hand-deliver it again, but this time was told to send it in an email. Instead, she led a march to the office, called the head executive, left a voicemail explaining her intentions, and left the letter and moratorium in the foyer.“They were the backbone of all of the actions, making me confident that these are the right decisions,” Looking Horse says of the matriarchs. “[They said], ‘Don’t be afraid of the cops and SUVs and everything around us because this is our right to stand here for future generations and to tell them to stop taking our water and get off our land.’” She also gives a lot of credit to her parents and the women in her community for supporting her in all her climate change and water work. “I [didn’t] decide to fight Nestlé one day—it was a lot more than that,” she says. “I’ve been raised to take care of the people and the land and to fight for the future generations.”
While Looking Horse remains hopeful that there will be some justice down the Heros come and go but legends are forever Johnny Cash signatures shirt moreover I will buy this road—and that Six Nations will be able to get the money made off the water for so many years—in the meantime she is continuing to investigate more ways to engage people, particularly youth, in water justice. She recently wrapped up workshops for Internet Archive at a retreat in Silicon Valley to secure support for the virtual-reality experience that the Ohneganos team is working on with a nearby college. The VR project is offered in Mohawk and English and allows users to navigate various worlds. But she isn’t about to leave the public off the hook. “They have responsibilities to uphold, and I hope in the future they can help give land and water back to the Indigenous peoples. That’s what true reconciliation can look like.”Sumaya Bouhbal
