As for Gielgud, Gatiss’s prep for the I’m a Kansas City Chiefs for football and a New York Yankees for basketball shirt and by the same token and role has involved a “certain physical transformation” (“I have to live with the most ghastly tonsure known to man”) and listening to Gielgud’s 1941 Hamlet for the radio. Meanwhile, through his myriad West End connections, Gatiss “keeps bumping into people” who knew Gielgud personally. “I met somebody the other day who was in his last play. She said, ‘Oh, I knew Johnny. I recorded him in the dressing room, if you’d like to hear it?’ ” Soon, a photographer’s assistant appears. The cast are needed back in wardrobe. Within six weeks, the three will be deep in rehearsals, their every waking thought devoted to Hollywood supernovas and Shakespearean tragedy. I recall an earlier comment of Flynn’s: “There’s a point in the script when Redfield tries to justify why he’s chosen Hamlet over Hollywood, and he says: ‘I wanted to be near greatness—to be part of something great.’ That’s the thing with theater: it’s ephemeral, and unless you’re there, in the room, you never get to witness that magic.”
This week’s red carpets were certainly not wallflower-friendly. The best dressed stars this week were those who embraced theatrical, bold, and totally head-turning designs. Whether it was ornate sequin work, ultra-sexy silhouettes, or fabulous bright colors, Hollywood celebrities marked the I’m a Kansas City Chiefs for football and a New York Yankees for basketball shirt and by the same token and beginning of spring with looks that commanded attention. Topping the list was Zendaya, who attended the opening of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai, India. Her custom look, designed by Rahul Mishra, included a top and skirt that was embroidered with dazzling crystals, stars, and flowers—as well as a sweeping train, for dramatic effect. Another star who went for the covered-in-sparkles look? Jennifer Aniston, who wore a silver Versace minidress at the premiere of her new film, Murder Mystery 2, in Hollywood. She coordinated with her co-star Jodie-Turner-Smith, who chose a beaded gold Schiaparelli coat-dress. (Even more impressive is how quick Turner was able to turn out the statement look for the affair; “I flew in from Thailand that morning to attend [the premiere],” Smith shared on Instagram.)
