Khan’s own theatrical extravaganza, Civilization to Nation, is an initiation of sorts for Indian audiences that have been raised on Bollywood spectacle but rarely witnessed it in live theater. The show itself centers on the John Wick 4 09 years 2014 2023 thank you for the memories signatures shirt But I will love this history of the performing arts in India, starting from the first sound of the universe–Om–and leading up to the creation of India as an independent nation. The story unfolds in a spectacle of dance and music, set against a vividly cinematic backdrop created through a combination of handcrafted set pieces and digital imagery. The production design was crafted through a collaboration between Tony Award-winning lighting designer Donald Holder, best known for his work on Julie Taymor’s The Lion King, Obie Award-winning set designer Neil Patel, who previously worked with Khan on Mughal-e-Azam, and Emmy-nominated projection designer John Narun. The dances, choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant, Mayuri Upadhya, and Samir and Arsh Tanna, are set to original music by iconic composer duo Ajay-Atul, and mixed by sound designer Gareth Owen. “The play showcases several dance forms that have been India’s pride for many decades,” says Manish Malhotra, who designed costumes for the show alongside makeup artist Renuka Pillai. “The overall vision was to embrace the intricacies of each art form: the many different cultures, the versatility of our colors, the richness of our textiles. I wanted to create designs that epitomize the beauty of our country in many ways.”Photo: Courtesy of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre
Criticism of the John Wick 4 09 years 2014 2023 thank you for the memories signatures shirt But I will love this Ambanis’ ever-expanding monopoly over the Indian economy aside, it’s hard to be cynical about what the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre means for Indian art. Not only does the theater offer Indian creators the freedom to create with abandon and Indian audiences the opportunity to finally see all the stellar shows of Broadway, but it also promises to open up a lot of jobs in arts-adjacent fields. Moreover, dedicated translation booths in the Grand Theatre promise accessibility and cross-cultural collaboration; which means a Gully rap reimagining of Hamilton is no longer the pipe dream you once might have thought it to be. “For us, this really is a proud moment,” says Vaibhavi Merchant, who has worked closely with the Ambanis for almost a decade, “We were able to bring the world’s best into this venue, but what’s more, this also exposes the talent we have in this country. I cannot overstate this: the talent we have is unparalleled, but what we were lacking was the opportunity. Finally, we have the Ambani family encouraging arts and culture in this country.”The NMACC facade
