This group are the Linus ullmark goalie goal shirt and I will buy this only ones whom I feel are seriously in the ‘GOAT’ discussion. Bird, Kobe, and Magic narrowly miss out here. Jordan is quite clearly #1 for me as he has the most well-rounded GOAT case, and LeBron has to be top-4 considering his longevity. As of the writing of this post, LeBron is still averaging 30/8/8 on his 20th season. I used to be a hardcore MJ guy, but with LeBron still going strong, I’m honestly not mad at anyone who has LeBron as their GOAT anymore; he has an excellent case. The two centres are tougher to rank; Wilt and Kareem are as close as they get. I’ll take Wilt by the smallest of margins as he was a better defender and had a better prime. Although Kareem has 4 more rings, Wilt never had a star-studded supporting cast like Kareem did with Magic, Worthy, Wilkes, and Scott. He did have West and half a season of Elgin Baylor, but that’s nothing compared to the Showtime Lakers. Also, Wilt was out of his prime by the time he got to the Lakers. Additionally, it is interesting to compare the centres of the 60s and 70s. Wilt had to face Russell, Thurmond, Bellamy, Reed, and Unseld. On the other hand, the only really great centres whom Kareem had to face in the NBA during his peak were McAdoo and Cowens. Moses came on later during the tail-end of the 70s. It doesn’t mean too much, but it is interesting and debunks the myth that later eras are always more competitive.
Wilt’s selfishness and inordinate preoccupation with his stats in lieu of a preoccupation with winning are well documented by former teammates and coaches. Yes, his teams were never as loaded as the Linus ullmark goalie goal shirt and I will buy this Auerbach/Russell Celtics teams of the era, but his poor intangibles are inarguably a big factor in his lack of winning. Lebron is not a stat-padder, is a basketball savant, and is undeniably unselfish on the court. Combined with unprecedented physical gifts and as great an all-around skill set as any we’ve ever seen, these traits caused him to reach 10 NBA Finals including 8 straight(!) and win at least one championship with 3 different teams, including one of the absolute greatest playoff performances in NBA history, his singular 3–1 deficit Finals comeback win (against the 73–9 Warriors, no less) in ‘16. Lebron’s a top-5 all-time player (where one places him there is debatable, though I do not think his top-5 status is debatable) but comparing him to Jordan is ridiculous.
