Fly 1: “His liver?! I’m more worried about his lungs, what with all those clumpy green things he keeps rolling into those short white sticks and then burning against his mouth!” Fly 2: “And he keeps having those spasms while pressed against that other one. Do you think they’re fighting? Whenever they go to bed, there is usually a lot of yelling and such…” Fly 1: “That’s just how humans fertilize each other’s eggs. I know that it looks scandalous, but it’s actually quite boring. They just yell a lot during fertilization.” Fly 2: “Well what’s that thing that called when he sits with the Never underestimate a woman who understands basketball and loves San Diego State Aztecs men’s shirt moreover I will buy this magick box and does nothing for several hours?” Fly 1: “I’ve heard that’s called Baldur’s Gate. Don’t ask me what it means, though. It’s one of those human things that makes no sense.” Note: I’m really not sure why, but I imagine both of these flies having Welsh accents. That’s not necessary for appreciation of the answer hereabove, but it helps give a clearer picture of the conversation as it exists in my head. I moved from a small town in the South to Chicago when I was just 18. In those first few years in Chicago, I had many stereotypical “small-town transplant to a big city” experiences, like how expensive everything was, how crowded many places were, hearing people speak languages that weren’t English or Spanish on a regular basis while out in public, seeing people in non-Western clothes while out in public, etc… What was truly shocking for me… and it took me living here for several years before I realized the scope of it… was the acceptance of local government corruption. It’s not that Chicagoans don’t see the corruption; it’s that they either don’t care, laugh it off, or use it to their advantage. I think many of them assume it’s like this everywhere.
And that’s just the Never underestimate a woman who understands basketball and loves San Diego State Aztecs men’s shirt moreover I will buy this corruption part of the city’s government. The ineptitude part is also shocking for immigrants like me. That includes things like: And the members of my family and social circles who’ve lived in Chicago their entire life just accept all of this, laugh it off, or try to benefit from it. (Some of them are retired city workers who gamed the system to pad their pensions in their final years at work.) They treat the government corruption and ineptitude like they treat Chicago winters: like it’s an inevitable part of living in the city. And, with so many people with that attitude, I guess it is inevitable. Nothing will really change with this, at least not in my lifetime. That doesn’t mean it isn’t shocking, though. Don’t make it a big thing. Just confidently walk up to them with a genuine smile on your face. From there, you could compliment them on their shoes, ask them if they could teach you how to draw if they’re sitting there doing a sketch, etc.
