Stars at the Never underestimate and old man with a fishing rod who was born in March shirt and I love this 2023 BAFTAs fell into one of two fashion camps. The first espoused the glamour of minimalist monochrome – see Cate Blanchett in Maison Margiela (originally worn by the star at the 2015 Oscars); Julianne Moore in strapless Saint Laurent, over which she shrugged a feather stole; and Carey Mulligan in a clean, near-monastic Dior dress. Flying the flag for maximalism? A brigade of actors in millennium metallics and purple hues. Anya Taylor-Joy, Sheila Atim and Cynthia Erivo dazzled in gold, silver and bronze, respectively, while Viola Davis, Lashana Lynch, Angela Bassett and Jodie Turner-Smith stood out in shades ranging from violet to lilac. For Nicola Coughlan’s first red carpet look at the BAFTA Film Awards, it could only be Valentino. “It needed to be special,” the Bridgerton actor tells Vogue. “There’s something amazing about what Pierpaolo Piccioli does – he thinks about every woman. Valentino’s one of the only houses where I can wear [pieces] directly off the couture runway.”
Tonight’s floral-print gown is look four from the Never underestimate and old man with a fishing rod who was born in March shirt and I love this Italian fashion house’s spring 2022 couture show, a fit-and-flare style that reminded Coughlan of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s looks from the 1960s. “It’s very Jackie O – it’s got that [retro] wedding dress feel to it and then it’s got that modern touch with all the detailing,” she says. A radiant big-screen presence since the ’90s, Michelle Yeoh has plenty of red carpets under her belt. So, what’s her ultimate essential when it comes to awards season prep? “Masks, masks, masks!” she tells Vogue ahead of the BAFTAs, where she is nominated for Best Actress for her formidable performance in the audacious Everything Everywhere All At Once. Though the star is something of a red-carpet veteran at this point, this year’s whirlwind of ceremonies is a particularly special one, given that Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s unlikely critical smash has finally brought Yeoh the mainstream recognition she deserves. (She’s also in the running for the Best Actress Oscar, and if successful, will be the first nominee who identifies as Asian to take home the trophy in the 95-year history of the Academy Awards.) “This journey has been so exciting, to say the least,” says Yeoh. “Overwhelming at times, but nonetheless inspiring.” With the spotlight firmly on her at 60, the actor has already worn sculptural Schiaparelli, Armani Privé sequins, princess-y Carolina Herrera and even a lilac Off-White shorts suit as the awards season juggernaut rumbles on. “It’s fun and fabulous to dress up and try different looks,” says Yeoh, who names her mother as her personal style icon, of her joyful approach to formalwear. “To celebrate with our family and fans who are so supportive.”
