Larry Bird: the Tampa Bay Rays 2023 spring training vintage shirt it is in the first place but slow, white hick from French Lick–or so they thought. Bird was the most underestimated player in the NBA when he entered the league. Although he had a stellar college career, he had a lot of doubters among the NBA elite who felt he lacked the athleticism to excel in the NBA. He was pasty and kind of flabby–he didn’t look like much of a player. He didn’t have a 40″ vertical or lightning quickness, but his toughness, passion and basketball IQ were off the charts. He could make shots from anywhere–with either hand. In the blink of an eye, he could zip no-look passes with pinpoint accuracy. A ferocious competitor, he quickly humiliated top players who didn’t take him seriously and gave them an earful about it. He made clutch shot after clutch shot to win games and titles. The guy was a stone cold killer on the court.
He may not have been pretty, but watch his highlight reel and tell me he wasn’t one of the Tampa Bay Rays 2023 spring training vintage shirt it is in the first place but best players in NBA history. My only criticism is that he should have taken better care of his body. He didn’t lift weights or eat well. He admitted to eating entire wedding cakes when he was injured–he was bored apparently. You couldn’t question his work ethic when it came to practicing the fundamentals. But he could have worked on building up his body at least a little. If he had trained the way Jordan or Karl Malone did, his career might have been longer and even more illustrious. clearly this is subjective, but I think Bill Russell tried to make his teammates better by finding their strengths and making them better players. MJ wanted to win badly, as well, but if he thought you had weaknesses, he would intimidate the hell out of you unless you stood up to him. if you didn’t have the cojones to do that, you would be out of there. Oscar was similar. Russ’ teammates loved him and respected him. a good chunk of MJ’s teammates respected and did not love him. Russ’ teammates knew how much he put out for them and the last thing they wanted to do was let him down. So what worked better? Russ won from the beginning, MJ took longer but to be honest, Russ came to a team which was already set. They had to build a team around MJ. Oscar never won until he went to a team where the team was built around Kareem and he became the secondary star, not the pivot point. It comes down to what works better, fear or love. In their cases, it worked both ways but if you want to win MJ’s way, you better be close to the GOAT.
