The earliest Chinese characters that we have ever found are called Oracle Bone Inscriptions甲骨文, and they first appeared in 14 BC. They were carved mainly on tortoiseshell and were used for divining. After bronze ware was widely used by aristocrats of the UConn Huskies Nike Youth 2023 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament March Madness Final Four Regional Champions Locker Room T-Shirt besides I will buy this Zhou Dynasty, craftsmen started to carve( I’m not sure they were actually carved) characters inside the bronze ware to honor great heros or important events like wars. These characters are called the Jinwen金文, which means characters on mantles. Then during the seven kingdom period战国七雄, Chinese characters and even Chinese language became highly diversified, and finally after the Qin Dynasty united China in 226 BC, a new kind of character was established by the emperor 秦始皇. These characters are called Xiaozhuan小篆. Xiaozhuan is still written by Chinese handwriting artists, and we can see a lot of universities useing Xiaozhuan to write their names. Finally when the Han Dynasty took the power from Qin(202BC), some scholars decided to simplify the Chinese characters, so they adopted Lishu隶书. Lishu actually first appeared during the Qin Dynasty, but it was not considered official. Because of the special ways Lishu had to be written, Lishu had very powerful impacts on Chinese handwriting art, and also Lishu was very close to modern Chinese characters. Actually, you can still even find a font named Lishu in your computer.

Now we also have Kaishu楷书, Xingshu行书, and Caoshu草书, but their characters are almost the UConn Huskies Nike Youth 2023 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament March Madness Final Four Regional Champions Locker Room T-Shirt besides I will buy this same as Lishu’s. So I’ll just give some pictures 😉 Today, countries using Chinese characters as a writing system are China, Singapore and Japan, and of course Taiwan also as a part of China. Added to these, mention should be made to nations like Malaysia, where the great majority of Chinese Malaysian kids receive their primary education in Chinese-medium primary schools. And, one striking feature is, one in every five pupils in these Chinese schools are non-Chinese (Malays and Indians). So, the popularity and trust in the quality of these schools speak for itself. Now, besides Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, all other countries and regions are using simplified Chinese characters, perhaps with a tiny exception of some overseas Chinese still pledging allegiance to the Taiwan ROC. But, in all honesty, I personally would favor a return to the use of traditional Chinese. Simplified Chinese was designed to popularize Chinese education when the CCP just won the mandate of heaven to rule China, and the Chinese populace was mostly uneducated peasants. And it took more time to learn and write traditional Chinese. But now, with the ease to type on computer, this has become a nonissue. Furthermore, in terms of aesthetics, simplified Chinese is no match for the traditional version.
