There was a time when every educated person in the Western world could read Latin, and many could read Greek as well. In addition, they were almost all Christians. The Reformation and the Enlightenment brought about new ideas that spread throughout the West. These things were the basis of what we now call “Western culture.” Churchill said that democracy is the worst form of government except all of the others that have been tried. You could say something similar about Western culture. There are many ways to judge a society, but one of the better ones is by where the lines are. If there’s a line outside the door waiting to get it, that society is probably pretty good. If there’s a line on the inside waiting to get out, that society is probably not as good.
