I do not endorse American exceptionalism, however. Many other countries do many things better than we do: drug treatment, mental health understanding and treatment, race relations, equal justice, healthcare, and affordable housing, to name a few. People who wish to denigrate free societies will jump on these bad choices and their consequences as if they define those societies. What culture of any significance isn’t open to the charge of every sin which, rightly or wrongly, is levelled at the culture of the West ? A culture which, outshining all others by orders of magnitude, has bestowed immeasurable benefits on the whole of humanity? It’s no good judging the past by the standards of today. That is to be historically illiterate. And it is the case that modern ideas of justice, decency, right behaviour and so forth are in fact largely the products of that same Western culture. If Western culture is to be judged at all, it is whether or not it has lived up to its own best ideals.
Western culture certainly has its bad points. In recent decades it has drifted to an extreme individualism, which is personal freedom trumping everything else, ie selfishness. Selfishness has been elevated as a good rather than something to be condemned. Thus these trends whilst purporting to liberate lifestyles etc, have very ironically resulted in a catastrophic loss of freedom of speech and action.
