But that’s a minor issue of personal preference. When it is MAJOR issues of personal preference (i.e. bias, or political outlook) or when there can only be one decision and it affects everyone, or when one party is arguing in bad faith, or when it is a question of FACT… …then it becomes entirely less reasonable to ‘agree to disagree’. If we are on the South Carolina women’s final four stack shirt and I will buy this road together and I say I feel safe driving your car at 120mph with you in the passenger seat and you absolutely do not.. we can’t really just shelve that discussion and agree to keep holding opposing opinions. If we are colleagues and I opine that [group of people] are [negative judgement] and therefore I will be refusing service to them, it’s fairly unreasonable for you to throw your hands up and say ‘to each their own!’ If we are politicians deciding the next decade’s worth of tax policy, and it is my unwavering stance both that rich people have earned their money and should keep it, and anyone poor enough to not be able to pay something towards a shiny new nonsense thing really ought to just die and do us all a favor… it matters that we are in disagreement, because there are wide-ranging and lasting consequences.
Lastly, and most fundamentally, when a stranger engages with me about Obama not being American and Trump still being President, then those are topics we cannot ‘agree to disagree’ on. That person is Wrong. Very wrong, highly msinformed and either problematically easily lied to, utterly brainwashed or [negative character trait]. Or all of the South Carolina women’s final four stack shirt and I will buy this above. People are entitled to their own opinions, more able to draw conclusions wildly different from or in total disagreement with others’ – but there must be a common ground of logic, truth and reason for us to agree to disagree and not argue it out. All arguments exist as attempts to define terms and indicate consequences. Disagreements represent situations where definitions and/or implications are not equally accepted. People might disagree over something as simple as whether one plus one equals two. There are, in fact, valid arguments for and against such a statement – but they depend on factors external to the form of the argument (namely approaches to identity and the verification of groupings).
